Hubert is listed as being killed in action on 25 Apr 1915. The 3rd Battalion war diary entries for the period 24th to 26th April 1915 is transcribed below. Trenches - Polygon Wood, Ypres - April 24th: Continuous shelling & rifle fire all day in the north. 2/Lt Hayward killed by a shell. The Shropshires who have been in support of us are called away. We accordingly weaken our front line bringing back ½ Company more in support making 1½ Coys Support and 2½ Coys in firing line. The enemy’s trenches in front appear to be weakly held. Trenches - Polygon Wood, Ypres - April 25th: Badly shelled all day causing us to shift the Bn HQ to another portion of the wood. Trenches - Polygon Wood, Ypres - April 26th: Started work on a new line running along the Eastern Side of Nonne Boschen Wood to Westhoek. Draft of 127 men under 2Lts Balfour & Wyndham arrived at midnight. |
