Circumstances of Death
James is listed as being killed in action on 1 Sep 1918. The battalion war diary states that they were in the front line at Gory Trench just NE of Vis-en-Artois where they had gathered prior to launching an attack on german lines at Drocourt-Quéant on the following day. However reference is made to shellfire and a quiet night, on this day the casualties are listed as 2 killed and four wounded. We now know that the two men killed were James and Private Henry Cockerell of Long Itchington.
