William is listed as being killed in action on 22 Aug 1918. The 1st/24th Battalion war diary entry covering the period from the evening of 21st to the early morning of 23rd August is transcribed below. Wednesday Aug 21 1918 – Heilly: Bn rested in Heilly area. 11pm Bn prepares to move Thursday Aug 22 1918 – Heilly: Attack on Happy Valley. Coys in position at 3.55am. BN HQ at K.10.d.5.0 6.45am: Advance HQ under Lt Coombe established in gunpits in K.12.a 8.10am: HQ Established L.1.a.3.2. Advance HQ established L.1.a.3.2. Runner sent to find Coys at 10am. 12 noon: First report from Coys from HQ runners. A & B in Green Line. 4pm. Front line withdrawn to Brown line owing to intense enfilade MG fire and heavy shelling. SOS went up at 5.15pm. Coy of 23rd [London] sends a situation report to Bde and at 7pm our artillery opened a covering barrage in front of Brown line along Happy Valley. 142nd Bde was withdrawn at 11.30pm leaving 15th, 18th, 19th, 20th and 17th Battalions holding the line. Friday Aug 23 1918 – Happy Valley, Heilly: 6am: Bn relief complete. Casualties: Officers Killed 2; Wounded 6, taken prisoner 1. Other rank casualties not mentioned. |
