  • Fredercick had recovered from being wounded in the shoulder at Ploogsteert on 18 Oct 1915 and was returned to his unit in France on 20 Jan 1916.

Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

Frederick is listed as being killed in action on June 13th 1916. The war diary for that day is transcribed below.

The foot of Hill 61 - June 13:

1am: A second terrific bombardment was opened up by our artillery on the enemy's trench until 1.30am when it lifted to the trenches in rear and then the battalion attacked the enemy's frontline trench. This trench was found to be well constructed properly revetted and with deep dugouts.

10 minutes was allowed for the capturing of this trench after which the battalion moved on to Montreal [trench] and to the objective Winnipeg trench the final objective. Vancouver trench being bombed and held by bombing posts. Our artillery kept up a heavy curtain of fire between our new frontline and the enemy.

2am: The enemy kept up heavy artillery fire on sanctuary wood, Armagh wood add observatory Ridge all day.

During the attack the battalion lost 257 killed and wounded. Four officers killed, 5 wounded, one died of wounds.

June 14 – The battalion was relieved by the 10th Canadian Battalion and moved out in small parties by bus to Patricia lines. END
