Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

Fred died of his wounds at one of the 4th, 47th and 61st Casualty Clearing Stations which used Dozinghem Cemetery and had been moved their in July 1917 in prepartion for the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele). On the 10th August the battalion moved to the front lines at Venheule Farm SW of St. Julien (see also Pvt Frederick Cox of Flecknoe). It is reported that Fred was wounded on 13th August at St. Julien, other possible dates are 10th & 11th Aug 1917 when 38 men were wounded or the 12th August 3 men were wounded on a working party on the nearby Hanebeek Canal Bank. All of these woundings were caused by enemy shellfire.
