Circumstances of Death

Albert is listed as dying of wounds on 25th July 1917 at the 11th Casualty Clearing Station at Godewaersvelde. The 101st Coy war diary entries for the period 23rd to 26th October are transcribed below and Albert was most likely wounded the previous day.

23.7.1917: Camp was moved about a quarter of a mile south of old position owing to the night shelling. Pioneers commenced formation lead of pit prop road running from Chester Farm to Knoll Road.

24.7.1917: Nos 2 & 4 sections commence work on Sleeper road. Standing at L Railhead near Blauve Port and working towards Chester Farm. Whilst on the job 2 men were killed and 5 men wounded owing to a ammunition dump near by exploding. Clasper & Crockett were the 2 Sappers who were killed.

25.7.1917: No 1 & 3 sections continued on road and completed 80 yards. Spr Clasper and Spr Crockett were buried.

26.7.1917: Nos 2 & 4 sections continued on the road. Nos 1 & 3 doing fatigues in camp till 12.30pm. The Company had a cricket match against the 133rd A.T. Coy RE. and won by about 60 runs.
