Circumstances of Death

Alfred is listed as being killed in action on 13th October 1916. The 1st Battalion war diary entries for the period 13th & 14th are transcribed below. The entry for the 12th October can be found by clicking here.

13.10.1916 – Trenches E of Les Boeufs: Dull day. Our artillery inactive, enemy fairly active on front line. Relieved at night by 2nd R Dublin Fus. Relief completed at 10.30pm.

Coys marched to Guillemont and into shell holes.

14.10.1916 – Guillemont: Fine cold day, Battalion gets clean and O C Coys have inspections. The G O C IV Division visited Lt Col G.N.B Forster to inform all ranks that he was very pleased with the way in which we carried out the attack on the 12th.
