Circumstances of Death
Albert is listed as being killed in action on 2nd May 1915. The 1st/8th Battalion war diary contains only a few entries for this time and they are transcribed below. However from them we can say that Albert was the only man killed during a 5 day tour in the front lines. Le Touquet - 30 April 1915: The remainder of the 4th Division, on our right having been withdrawn, an alteration in the trench dispositions became necessary & on returning to the trenches on this date the Battalion moved to a new area between Le Touquet and the River Warnave. 30th April to 4th May: No entries Pont de Nieppe – 5 May 1915: The Battalion went into Divisional Reserve at Pont de Nieppe, after occupying trenches between Le Touquet and the River Warnave for 5 days. Casualties during this period 1 man killed and 13 wounded. 11 of the latter were wounded by Rifle Grenades in on spot (Central Farm) owing to further rifle grenades falling among men who had crowded round the first casualty. |
