Circumstances of Death

James was admitted to the 1st Stationary Hospital at Rouen on 29th September 1915 with a gun shot wound to the head and he died there the following day. The 2nd Battalion war diary does not help identify the day on which James was wounded but it does show that they were constantly engaged with the enemy near Vermelles in the days leading up to his death during the Battle of Loos. James would have first been taken to a Casualty Clearing Station, perhaps via a Field Ambulance, and then evacuted via Ambulance Train to Rouen.

The Battalion were engaged in a large scale attack on 26th September, for more about that day please click here.
