Circumstances of Death

James died on 29th August 1918 from the effects of [poison] gas at one of the Casaulty Clearing Stations based at Pernes-en-Artois and he was buried in the cemetery there. In the main Labour Corps units were not required to keep war diaries after April 1917 and we have not found one for 51st Company in the National Archives so we cannot comment on when and where James was gassed.
