Alfred is listed as being killed in action on the 4th October 1915 when his dugout was hit by an enemy trench mortar. The 1st Battalion war diary entries for the period 3rd to 5th Oct 1915 are transcribed below.

3rd October 1915 – Trenches – Sucrerie, Mailley Maillet: Quiet night and day. More German sniping than usual. Capt Hesketh Pritchard came up during the afternoon and sniped – accounting for one German. Fine

4th October 1915 – Trenches – Sucrerie, Mailley Maillet: More German shelling than usual. [German] Trench Mortar fell in B Coy’s trench knocking in one dugout, result one killed [Alfred], 4 wounded. 5.9 Howitzers again in evidence but did no damage. Our heavies retaliated in the Salient with effect. B Coy again shelled between 5 & 6pm without damage. Stormy in the morning.

5th October 1915 – Trenches – Sucrerie, Mailley Maillet: Very heavy shelling audible from Arras direction. Quiet day, less sniping than usual. C.S.M. shot a German sentry about 10am from Monk Trench. Rained all day. Lieut J.R. Landon went sick.
