Circumstances of Death
Charles is listed as being killed in action on 13th June 1917. The 8th Battalion war diary entries for the 12th and 13th June are transcribed below and show that Charles was killed duing an enemy artillery bombardment on their front line trenches. Neuve Eglise – 12.6.1917: Bn relieves Auckland Battm 4th Australian Div in front line. Night spent in patrol work Neuve Eglise – 13.6.1917: Enemy shelled with great intensity our front system of trenches from 7pm to 10.15pm blowing a great position of newly dug trenches and burying a number of our men. Casualties were 34 killed and wounded including Capt. Baylis OC D Coy killed. |
