Circumstances of Death

Thomas is listed as being killed in action on 29 August 1916. The 4th Battalion war diary entries for the 28th, 29th & 30th August are transcribed below.

Front Line – 28.8.16: Showery. Our line from Longueval – Flers Road to about 400 yards to north. Heavy shelling on front line and support day & night. 9 killed, 20 wounded (3 shell shock).

Front Line – 29.8.16: Fine, warm – quieter. Officers of 9th Royal Sussex Regt round front line trenches. 3 Officers 5th Scottish Rifles visit front line. 10 men killed; 32 wounded (10 shell shock), 1 man missing

Front Line – 30.8.16: Wet. Enemy shelling heavily – relieved by 9th Royal Sussex Regt – Guides at Mametz village at 5pm. 2 men wounded, 2 to hospital. 9 men returned from Field Ambulance.
