Circumstances of Death
Alexander is listed as being killed in action on either the 15th or 16th September 1916 duing the Battle of the Somme. The 14th Battalion war diary for the period 14th to 17th September is transcribed below. Mailly - 14th: Relieved 13th R Sussex R in left sub-sector of Auchonvillers. Relief complete by 1pm. Working Parties duck boarding. Minor artillery opertations. Mine and raids on left. Preparation for smoke but wind not favourable for it. Minenwerfer [short range Mortar aka minnies] not active. 2 Casualties. Auchonvillers - 15th: Slightly active in the early morning. Minnies active in the afternoon. Artillery wire cutting. 13th Sussex up to raid, couldn’t get thro wire. Strong patrol of ours out. Good news from South. 3 Casualties Auchonvillers - 16th: Aeroplanes active – enemies and ours. Artillery wire cutting. Scare about 6pm, report that enemy were coming over. Very active in the night minnies and rifle grenades. Our strong patrols out & wirers. 8 Casualties – 2 accidental cleaning bombs. Auchonvillers - 17th: Very quiet day, only a few shells flying about. Busy wiring. Capt Gunner DSO wounded just before midnight. |
