Circumstances of Death

William is listed as being killed in action on 21 May 1916. The 22nd Company war diary entries for the period 21th to 22nd July are transcribed below, he was most likely killed in the early hours overnight 20th/21st.

20 Jul 1916 – Bazentin le Grand: 20th Brigade attacked line E of High Wood

Bazentin le Grand, Sunken Road and E of T3.l.9  Wood heavily shelled. One gun No 1 Section and One gun No 2 Section were put out of action by shell fire.

Relived by 100th Bde M.G. Coy. Relieving Coy moved off from Mamatx Wood at 9.30pm but were delayed by hostile shell fire.

Killed 1 – Wounded 7

21 Jul 1916 – Bazentin le Grand: On completion of relief company marched by sections to Bernancourt where it bivouacked in the open to the N of the village. At 4pm transport moved off with remainder of the Brigade Transport to Cordinette en route for new billeting area.
