Circumstances of Death

Robert is listed as being killed in action on 9 Jan 1918. The 17th Battalion war diary entry for that day is transcribed below.

Croisilles - 1918-Jan-9: Bn in the front line trenches. Hostile Artillery fairly active, also our own. 2/Lt Freeman took out a day light Patrol to find and bring back a German who had been seen in No Mans Land but he was not to be found. Patrol work was carried out during the hours of darkness but no enemy were encountered.

2nd/Lt McCartney was killed whilst on duty in the Front Line trenches.
