Circumstances of Death
Henry is listed as dying of wounds on 6 May 1918 in Etaples (see above). According to his service records Henry was wounded on 18 Apr 1918. The 5th/6th Battalion war diary for the period 17th to 19th April is transcribed below. Casualty details are not given at all for April 1918 Left sub-sector, Ayette Sector 17/4/18: Battalion in the line strengthening posts. At dawn Sgt Smith of C Coy heard a shot from our lines and on looking over parapet observed one of the enemy leave our wire and take cover in a shell hole, he immediately left our lines and rushed out to where this man seen and brought him back [as a] prisoner. 2n Lt L.N. Tomlinson joined Battalion from base. Draft of 5 O.R’s joined Battalion from base. Left sub-sector, Ayette Sector 18/4/18: Battalion in the line working strengthening posts. Posted Coy relief A & B Coys relieving C & D in line. OO.150. Draft of 5 O.R’s joined Battalion from base. Left sub-sector, Ayette Sector 19/4/18: Battalion in the line working strengthening posts. Active patrolling carried out. |
