Arthur is listed as being killed in action on 2 Nov 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. The brieft war diary entry for that day is transcribed below: Front Line - 2-11-16 - Thurs: The morning was spent in work on the trenches which were in very bad condition. In the afternoon the Battalion was relieved by 9th R.W.F [Royal Welsh Fusiliers]. Relief complete 3pm. Companies returned to their former positions in Reserve Trench except that B Coy went to Zollern Redoubt & A Coy to Danube Trench. Casualties: 1 killed [Arthur] and 9 wounded. END |

Brother of Edward Joseph Jones who also fell. These brothers joined up on the same day in 1914 and have consecutive service numbers (9770 and 9771). They both served in the 10th Battalion, they both arrived in France on the same day, both were killed during the Battle of the Somme and both are remembered on the Thiepval Memorial
