Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
Edgar is listed as being killed in action on 21 Sep 1914 and the Warwickshire Roll of Honour book states that Edgar was shot in the neck while taking part in the relief of the Leicestershire Regt on night of 21st/22nd however the war diary does not list any deaths for that time and therefore we have transcribed the entries for the 20th, 21st & 22nd Sept 1914.Trenches - Vailly - 20th Sept: Firing commenced at dawn & heavy shelling all morning. Attack on sector where C Coy was firing?. Germans broke through & round right flank of Brigade but driven out. Casualties Lieut C Henry, Lieut H.J.G Gilmoor, 2 Lieut C.C Harrison killed & 21 [other ranks] killed; 2 Lt T.P Muspratt & 37 [other ranks] wounded and about 30 [other ranks] missing.
Trenches - Vailly - 21st Sept: Some shelling about midday otherwise quiet day. Casualties 2 wounded
Trenches - Chassemy - 22nd Sept: Relieved at midnight 21/22 by 2/Leicestershire Reg & moved into bivouac about 2 miles N of Braine. Left 3.30pm and moved to Chassemy and relieved Norfolk Regt on W of Braine-Vailly Road one outpost covering Chassemy and watching Conoe Bridge. END
