Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

Arthur is listed as being killed in action on 13 Sep 1918 and the Brigade war diary for that day is transcribed below:

Cagnicourt - 13 Sept 1918: Hostile artillery activity considerable – Cagnicourt Severely harassed and battery positions attacked all day. The brigade some suffered somewhat severe casualties.

191 SB – Capt Drewe MC wounded, 5 OR’s killed (including Arthur) and 9 OR wounded.

The siege batteries were called in to cover a minor local operation by the infantry which was entirely successful.

Only one section of 6” & 8” howitzers remain in the forward positions, the remnants having been withdrawn to relieve the congestion of artillery around Villers and Cagnicourt. 2 guns of 191 SB will also be drawn back as the battery has suffered so severely. END
