Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

Charles died of wounds on 29 Nov 1917 at one of the 3 (4th, 47th and 61st) Casualty Clearing Stations based near Westvleteren and Dozinghem Cemetery. On 7 Dec 1917 the Stratford Herald reported that both Charles and his brother Cecil were in hospital suffering from the effects of gas poisoning. We have not been able to discover the exact date that he was gassed and/or wounded.

  • Played for Wellesbourne FC.
  • Charles has three brothers, Ernest, Cecil and Herbert who all served and survived the war although Herbert died in 1921 aged 37.
  • Charles clearly had links to the St. Albans area as he is named on Bernard's Heath Roll of Honour and he married his wife Nellie there in 1914 - some two years before he enlisted in nearby Watford
