Under Age Enlistment

Spencer originally lied about his age and enlisted in the RFA on 29 March 1915 but was "reclaimed by his parents" in Dec 1915. However he re-enlisted as soon as he turned 18 years of age in May 1917.

Circumstances Leading to Death

Spencer is listed as dying of wounds at the 54th Casualty Clearing Station at Aire on 23rd August 1918. The 11th Battalion war diary entries for the period 22nd to 27th August were not completed and the Appendix VI referred to for more information is missing any report on the operations of that period. The war diary entries for the 20th & 21st are transcribed below.

Arrewage Sector – 20th August 1918: Enemy found retiring to shorten line – patrols following closely & harassing him. All morning objectives (1000 yards advance) taken by 8.30am & patrols established a further 1500 yards ahead. Only isolated patrol encounters.

Bn HQ forward to K.15.a.90.45. Heavy barrage on our new line 11.15pm to 12.30am [21st].

Arrewage Sector – 21st August 1918: Offensive operation on left to bring up line to left flank of our Brigade. Salvaging ops.
