Circumstances of Death

Fred is listed as being killed in action on 28 Apr 1916 when the Germans exploded a mine under his unit. He was originally reported as missing in action. The battalion war diary for the period 26th to 28th April is transcribed below.

Divisional Reserve at ACQ - 26th [April 1916]: Battalion relieved 10th Cheshire Regiment from trenches North East of Mont St. Eloy

Trenches NE of St Eloy - 27th [April 1916]: In trenches. Enemy's artillery active on Communication Trenches during day and night.

Trenches NE of St Eloy - 28th [April 1916]: Enemy exploded mine under left Company's (D Coy) outpost line, they entered the trench but were driven out. The mine exploded about 7.15pm.

Casualties: Wounded 47; Killed 60 and Missing 14. END
