Circumstances of Death

James is listed as being killed in action on 23 Jul 1917. His CWGC records shows that a cross was erected bearing his name at map reference 28.B.11.b.9.9 which is in Boesinghe during south of the Ypres Canal. The below transcribed 1st Battalion war diary entries for the period 18th to 24th July 1917 show that it is likely that James was actually killed on the 24th.

A.10.b - 19 July 1917: Fatigues during night carrying R.E. material etc to front and support lines, dump etc

A.10.b - 20 July 1917: Lieut Colonel E.B.G Gregge-Hopwood DSO and Major S.J. Burton killed while visiting the line by shell. Fatigues at night as before. Physical training during the day.

A.10.b - 21 July 1917: Funeral of Lieut Colonel E.B.G Gregge-Hopwood DSO and Major S.J. Burton at Canada Farm Cemetery A.12.c.8.0 (Sheet 28NW) at 4pm. The Corps and Divisional Commanders attended. Fatigues as usual at night

A.10.b - 23 July 1917: Fatigues as usual at night

A.10.b - 24 July 1917: Fatigues as usual. Raiding parties of Nos 1 & 2 Coys under Lieut S.J. Warmington and Lieut J.R. Saunders, crossed canal and entered German front line during the night. Two Germans were killed and a large party dispersed. Casualties to raiding party:- Killed 1 O.R. [James?], Wounded 6 O.R.
