Circumstances of Death

Percy is listed as being killed in action on 25th August 1917. The 1st/5th Battalion war diary entries for the period 24th to 27th August are transcribed below.

E of St. Julien - 24.8.1917 – 3am: Enemy attacked the Gun Pits in force and with flamenwerfers and drove out C Coy.

E of St. Julien – Night 24/25.8.1917: Operations as in appendix VII & VIII [missing from the diary] were prepared for.

The attack on the gun pits was postponed overnight, the state of the ground and the gunpits were eventually retaken on the 25th by B Coy 1/8th R War R.

Throughout these operations communication was very difficult and slow owing to the state of the ground and severity of the enemy’s fire and the closeness of his observation and the runners suffered many casualties.

E of St. Julien – Night 26/27.8.1917: C Coy were sent up to support 1/5 R War R at C.12.d.2.2 and after the commencement of the attack moved forward to C.12.d.7.3 and were subsequently used for stretcher bearing.

3.15pm [27th] A, B & D Coys were sent as part of a composite Battalion back to Poperinghe.
