Phillip is listed as dying of wounds on 7th November 1918 and we believe, due to his burial location, that he was wounded earlier the same day. The 6th Battalion war diary entries for the 6th & 7th November 1918 are transcribed below. Roisin - 6/11/18: Battalion HQ moved to house at A.29.c.9.4. Village was heavily shelled during the day. C Coy was attached to the 2nd Yorkshire Regt as Reserve Coy, taking up position near Cemetery in A.30.d.7.6. near Meaurain. Roisin - 7/11/18: C Coy placed at the disposal of C.O. 2nd Yorkshires (who had suffered heavy casualties) for attack on River and Railway in B.26.1.17. 2nd Objective village of Gussignies as far as Bavay-Montignies Road (B.22-28). Zero hour 9am. 35th? Infantry Brigade on left, 19th Division on right. B Coy took over position vacated by C Coy. A & D Coys warned to be ready to leave at any moment. The 2nd Yorkshires having taken the village of Gussignies, A & B Coys moved forward, A on right B of left. Patrols pushed out to keep touch with Yorkshires. D Coy moved up in support. During the day Bn HQ were at Meaurain till 11.30am and then moved to Gussignies. The front line in the evening was taken over from the Yorks & ran down main Bavay Road. C Coy left, A Coy centre, B Coy right. D Coy on eastern edge of Gussignies. Enemy occupying woods in B.23 to B.29 |
