Circumstances of Death

Harold is listed as being killed in action on 9th October 1917. The 11th Battalion War Diary entries for the period 8th to 10th October are transcribed below.

Tower Hamlets [near Gheruveld] - 8 Oct 1917: Heavy shelling at intervals. Frequent rain. Improvement of Dug Out to serve as R.A.P.

Tower Hamlets [near Gheruveld] - 9 Oct 1917 - 5.20am: Attack by our troops on left of our sector, simultaneous the three batts in front line (112th Bde) with close objectives. In the event of enemy retiring [11th] battalion to move forward (SE direction) by bounds for about 1500 yards by means of fighting patrols (4 platoons full strength) no development.

5.45 am: Intense artillery retaliatory bombardment lasting 24 hours. Points most shelled Battalion HQ. Rap. Bassevillbeek to Dumbarton Dump.

Tower Hamlets [near Gheruveld] - 10 Oct 1917: Artillery very quiet all day but commences shelling heavily from 11pm onwards.

7pm: 112th Brigade relieved by 63rd Brigade. Battalion relieved by Yorks and Lancs Regiment. All out Coys out by 9.30pm but owing to 1 Officer and 60 Ranks of Y & L losing touch another guide was necessary to lead them to Support line.  Relief reported complete 9.45am on 11th inst.

Total casualties of 5 day tour 33 killed, 75 wounded and 4 missing.
