Circumstances of Death

Albert is listed as being killed in action on the 25th April 1918. The 9th Battalion war diary entries for the period 23rd to 25th April are transcribed below.

23/4/18 – Blangy: Battalion relieved the 3rd London Regiment in the reserve line running from V.13.c.5.0 to T.30.b.5.0. Battn at T.17.c.8.2

24/4/18 – Blangy: At 3.45am attack by the enemy delivered on Bois de Hangard HQ Coy heavily shelled at 2pm. Battalion moved up to U.21.a.2.3 to be held in readiness for counter attack.

At 8.30pm Battn ordered to attack zero hour being 10pm, objectives being to retake original trench line running from U.16.b.8.4 along edge of wood & trench too U.22.b.5.3. A, B & C Coys attacked only owing to insufficient time D Coy were unable to form up on the tape. The other Coys moved off from a line moving from U.15.b.0.5 to U.21.b.0.5.

A&B & part of C Coys gained their objectives but owing to being unable to gain touch with the Battalion on the left, the Coys had to be hold till the following night. Three machine guns and 65 prisoners captured.

25/4/18 – Blangy: In the evening the Battalion was relieved in the line by the 8th Queens and moved back to a camp in the wood at N.31.b

  • The only link we have found to Studley is Alberts Soldiers who Died in the Great War record which gives his place of birth as Studley.
    We believe this to be incorrect as his birth records clearly show he was born in Waltham, Kent.
