Circumstances of Death

George's recorded date of death is the 9th April 1917. The following war diary entries indicate he may have been killed on the 8th April.
 
Fresnoy le Petit - 8th April 1917 - At 7pm C Company and 2 platoons of B Company attacked the village of Fresnoy le Petit and after strong opposition reached their objective taking one prisoner. Total casualties 14 killed, 2 missing, 2 died of wounds and 37 wounded. One officer A/Capt Birch was sniped before action commenced. HQ's moved back to Keepers House from Battle Hdqrs after the action.
 
Fresnoy le Petit - 9th April 1917 - Troops cpnsolidating as far as possible during the day the captured position. The battalion was relieved by the 2/5 Warwicks commencing at 5pm and was completed by 10.50pm. On relief Coys proceeded to dug outs at Marteville, Bn being in close support. 11 bodies were buried under cover of the afternoon before the battalion retired.
