Distinguished Conduct Medal

For conspicuous gallantry in voluntarily going out under shell and bandaging wounded men. Later, with his company Commander, he went out across the open under machine gun fire, searched for and found a serjeant and three men who had been buried. 15 March 1916. (Gazette)

Circumstances of Death

Frank is listed as being killed in action on 1st July 1916, one of 772 officers men from his Battalion who became casualties on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. The 10th Battalion war diary entries for the period 30th June to 2nd July 1916 are transcribed below.

Trenches near Ville – 30 June 1916: Battalion moved to Battle positions

O.A.S. 1st July 1916: At 7.30am the Battalion took part in the grand assault. On our right were the 7th Division & on the left the 21st Division. The Battn assaulted in 4 lines. 2 lines got through the German position to the 4th line and were cut off, the attack on our left having failed.

Casualties were very heavy chiefly caused by Machine Guns which enfiladed our left flanks & were do deadly that the 3rd & 4th lines failed to get across No Mans Land.

22 Officer casualties including Lt. Col Dixon commanding and Major J Knott 2nd in command (both killed) and approximately 750 other ranks. The Battalion was then withdrawn to Ville.

Ville – 2nd July 1916: Bttn marched to Heilly. Lt Col H.A. Ross was appointed to command and assumed duty this day.
