Circumstances of Death

John is listed as being killed in action on 10th August 1915, having arrived at Suvla only days beforehand. The very brief 1st/6th Battalion war diary entries for the period 8th to the 11th August are transcribed below.

8th Aug 1915 – Sunday: Embarked at Murdos arrived at Suvla Bay in the evening, having called at Lemnos

9th Aug 1915 – Monday – Suvla Bay: Landed at Suvla Bay, came under shell fire

10th Aug 1915 – Tuesday – Suvla: Formed up for attack at 4.30am. Came under heavy shell fire as soon as we moved, fighting all day, lost.

11th Aug 1915 – Wednesday – Suvla: Retired last evening & acted as supports to 1st line trenches
