For conspicuous gallantry in action. He commanded his battery with great skill and determination. Later he carried out a most valuable reconnaissance, during this
he passed two trenches held by the enemy and captured two prisoners. (Gazette)

Circumstances of Death

Major Kidd was killed in action on 26th September 1916. The 70th Brigade war diary entry for that day is transcribed below.

26/9/1916 – Bazentin-le-Petit: During the morning hostile artillery was very quiet till 12.35pm when he put up a barrage in retaliation to our barrage. Infantry attacked on Battn flanks of our front. The Infantry were successful.

Bazentin-le-Petit was shelled during the evening and night with 4.2’s. A shell landed in the Officers Mess at 10pm going through the roof and killing Major G.E. Kidd and wounding 2nd Lts J.B.C Capper and G Nairn. 2nd Lt Capper died of wounds 2 hours after he was hit. 3 OR wounded by shell fire.
