Circumstances of Death
Major Kidd was killed in action on 26th September 1916. The 70th Brigade war diary entry for that day is transcribed below. 26/9/1916 – Bazentin-le-Petit: During the morning hostile artillery was very quiet till 12.35pm when he put up a barrage in retaliation to our barrage. Infantry attacked on Battn flanks of our front. The Infantry were successful. Bazentin-le-Petit was shelled during the evening and night with 4.2’s. A shell landed in the Officers Mess at 10pm going through the roof and killing Major G.E. Kidd and wounding 2nd Lts J.B.C Capper and G Nairn. 2nd Lt Capper died of wounds 2 hours after he was hit. 3 OR wounded by shell fire. |
