Circumstances of Death

Walter is listed as being killed in action on 8th June 1918 during an attack on German Lines at Beaumont Hamel. The 6th Battalion war diary entry for that day is transcribed below.

Front Line Mailly-Maillet – 8th June 1918: During the day the Raiding Party of the Battalion lay quiet in their assembly trenches.

At 10.05pm the barrage opened and the Battalion Raiding Party with a strength of 16 Officers and 500 men on the right in conjunction with the Raiding Party of a similar number from the 7th East Yorkshire Regiment assaulted the German lines near Beaumont Hamel to a depth of 500 yards. The Raid was a great success – the Battalion killing many Germans in hand to hand fighting, capturing about 40 prisoners and 4 machine guns.

Nearly 20 prisoners did not reach Battn HQ and owing to the carriers of the enemy M.G’s depositing the guns to fetch in wounded only 2 machine guns actually reached Bn HQ.

Separate narrative of the raid [not found] is attached together with maps and orders.

Casualties: Officers 7 wounded and 2 missing
Other Ranks: 148.
