Circumstances of Death

Cyril is listed as being killed in action on 22nd December 1917. The 5th Battalion war diary entries for the period 20th to 23rd December as transcribed below.

East of St. Julien – 20.XII.17: Frost still holding; very thick mist all day so that the Commanding Officer was able to get round the line about 10am. 2 Platoons of D Coy was moved forward about 300 yards to a more commanding position on the Bellevue spar. A Coy captured one prisoner about 6pm.

East of St. Julien – 21.XII.17: Another misty day but not quite so thick as yesterday. Capt. Brindley was wounded twice by a sniper in the front line. Everybody very cold but otherwise pretty happy, the order that every man is to wear 2 sandbags on each leg is proving of great value.

East of St. Julien – 22.XII.17: Bright sunny day, some signs of a thaw. Battalion relieved by 7th KRRC. The enemy apparently discovered the relief because the 60th had a pretty rough time coming in and lost a good few casualties. Relief complete by 12.20am [22nd] and we managed to get out without losing a man in spite of a heavy barrage of H.E. and Gas at Kansas Cross [cross Roads of Roselarestraat and Zonebekestraat].

East of St. Julien – 23.XII.17: HQ & A+C Coys accommodated in Capricorn Camp, B&D in California Camp. Day spent on resting and cleaning up.
