Circumstances of Death

Charles is listed as being killed in action on 30th September 1916. The 8th Battalion war diary entries for the 29th & 30th September are transcribed below. The battalion was involved in the attack on Hessian Trench and Stuff Redoubt.

X Coy attacked R.27.b.6.3 in conjunction with 6th Yorkshire Regiment
W Coy attacked R.27.b.6.3 in conjunction with 9th West Yorks
Y & Z Coys in support.

12.16pm: Objective reached, partly held. Z Coy reinforced attacking companies and consolidated new positions captured. Y Coy remained in Support. All captured positions held

Map Ref 57D.R.27.b.6.3 [E of Thiepval] – 1916.Sep.30th – 6pm: Bombing attack on a stronger position made by attacking Coys. Position captured and held.

12 midnight: Battalion relieved by 8th Bn South Lancashire Regt. Battalion marched out. Attacks made were a complete success. Enemy losses very great.

Our casualties from 28th to 30th inclusive: 10 Officers and 237 other ranks.
