Circumstances of Death
Donald is listed as dying of wounds on 1 July 1915 and he was buried in Bedford House Cemetery. This cemetery was used for burials by local Field Ambulances (more about Casualty treatment here) and therefore we have transcribed below the war diary entries 2 days prior and 1 day subsequent to the 1st July. Near Ypres – 29/6/1915: Battalion took over trenches from 43rd Infantry Brigade Near Ypres – 30/6/1915: Battalion in trenches C & D Coys in firing trench – B Coy is support. A Coy is reserve. Casualties: 2/Lt R. W. Somers killed and 2/Lt R. Boothroyd wounded. Other Ranks 4 killed and 6 wounded Trenches opposite Bellewarde Farm, E of Ypres – 1 July 1915: Battalion in trenches – C & D Coys in firing line E of Railway Wood. Germans shelled & trench mortared trenches. Casualties: 2/Lt H Brew killed, Capt. H.M. Gosling, 2/Lt N. Fuller wounded. Other Ranks 2 killed and 3 wounded. Trenches opposite Bellewarde Farm, E of Ypres – 2 July 1915: Battalion in same position. Draft of 50 arrived. Casualties 3 killed 30 wounded. |
