Meritorious Service Medal Citation

"His Majesty the KING has been graciously pleased to approve of the award of the Meritorious Service Medal to the undermentioned Warrant Officers, NCO's and
Men for devotion to duty on the occasion of the sinking or damage by enemy action of Hospital Ships, Transports and Store Ships".

The Wayfarer

Edward was aboard the HM Troop Ship Wayfarer was 60 miles West North-West of the Scilly Islands when it was struck by a torpedo from U Boat U32 on the port side, causing damage to the hay hold, engine room & boilers. Edward was one of 21 Officers and men who, having been evacuated from the ship went back aboard to crew it while it was towed to Queenstown, Ireland by two tugs. He, and 17 other men, were awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his actions during that time.

Circumstances of Death

Edward died of enteric fever at 9.45pm on 10th August 1915 at the 19th General Hospital in Alexandria, Eygpt. He had been admitted there on 4th August 1915 from "local". Click here for
