Circumstances of Death

John is listed as dying of wounds on 12 Jun 1916 and he was buried at Couin British Cemetery which at that time was used by Field Ambulances of the 46th (South Midlands) Division. With that in mind (click here for the Casualty treatment process) it is likely that John was the man wounded on 11th June 1916 per the 1st/6th Battalion war diary which is transcribed below..

Sailly June 1: Marched to bivouac near Sailly & went into Brigade Reserve

Sailly June 2nd to 5th: In Brigade Reserve

Sailly June 6th & 7th: In Brigade Reserve, Battalion together with 5th Battn and 50 men from 8th Battn dug 6 Saps out in front of H Sector running out 120 yards & also put out a belt of wire 4 ft deep and 800 yards long the whole of the front.

Casualies OR 4 killed , 1 missing, 3 wounded. Worked 9.30pm to 1.45am on 7th.

Trenches June 8th: Took over H Sector, relieved 5th Battalion in trenches. Worked on above scheme. 1 OR wounded.

Trenches June 9th: Continued above work all night

Trenches June 10th: Trenches. Honours Lt. Col F.O. Wethered CMG; Lt L.L. Greener MC & Lt. P.M. Pridmore MC

Trenches June 11th: Trenches. Casualties 1 OR killed and 1 wounded

Trenches June 12th: Relieved by 5th Gloucesters, marched to Corgmeux
