William is listed as dying of wounds on 22 Nov 1917 and was buried at Villers-Guislan Cemetery. As there were no medical units that used the cemetery for its burials we are presuming that he was wounded on the 21st (see Casualty Evacuations). However it is possible that he was wounded during the operations of the 20th and he was not recovered from the battlefield until the 21st or 22nd. The very brief 5th Battalion war diary entries for the 21st, 22nd & 23rd are transcribed below. Villers Guislain - 21st [Nov 1917]: The Battalion continued to consolidate line taken previous day. Shelling was light. Casualties 1 Killed & 1 Wounded [William?] Villers Guislain - 22nd [Nov 1917]: Holding line - Casualties Nil Villers Guislain - 23rd [Nov 1917]: Holding line - Casualties Nil |
