Circumstances of Death

George is listed as dying of wounds of 21st December 1914 at the 10th Field Ambulance in Ploegsteert. The 1st Battalion war diary entries for the 19th to 21st December are transcribed below.

St. Yves – 19.12.14: 4th Division ordered to attack Germans and straighten out the line. 10th Inf Bde participated by bursts of fire throughout the day while 11th Inf Bde attacked in afternoon. B Coy in trenches on right with one machine gun fired half right and assisted in attack, heavy fire by our guns all day. We suffered some casualties from our own gunners. Attack progressed well, result not known at nightfall.

St. Yves – 20.12.14: Regt continue sharp bursts of fire throughout the day to harass the enemy. 2 killed. Result of yesterdays attack was that 11th Bde made some ground. Relieved by R Dub Fus at usual time in evening.

Point 63 & Le Creche – 21.12.14: Quiet day throughout. Our guns showed considerable activity. BN moved to billets at La Creche in evening. Showery all day.
