Circumstances of Death

Thomas is listed as dying of wounds on 9th December 1915 and was buried at Sailly-sur-la-Lys Canadian Cemetery which was a front line cemetery not used by any Hospitals or Casualty Clearing Stations and therefore it is most likely that he died soon after he was wounded. The 6th Battalion war diary entries for the 7th, 8th, 9th & 10th December are transcribed below and indicate that Thomas was wounded on the 9th.

Billets Fleurbaix – 7th: Enemy shelled Fluerbaix. Coy’s carry out smoke helmet drill, physical training etc. Signaling and bombing classes parade for instruction. Working party of 50 men found, for work at Croix Marechal.

Casualties: 1 man killed, 2 men wounded.

Billets Fleurbaix – 8th: Training same as yesterday. Working parties found for work at Convent Avenue and Watling Street.

Billets Fleurbaix – 9th: Training same as yesterday. Working parties found for work at Convent Avenue and Watling Street.

Casualties: 1 man died of wounds.

Trenches – 10th: Relieved 6th Shropshire Lt Infty in the trenches.

Casualties: 1 man accidentally killed.
