Circumstances of Death

John is listed as being killed in action on 16th April 1918. The 10th Battalion war diary for the period 11.50pm on the 15th to 6.0am on the 17th is transcribed below.

Lindenhoek Crossroads- 15/1/18 – 11.50pm: in accordance with orders of 57th Bde the Battn sidestepped to the left, the boundaries on completion of the move being as follows. Left N.28.d.4.4 & Right N.27.d.7.4 (9/Welsh were on left, 8/N Staffs on right). A,C & D Coys were ordered to hold the front line. B Coy to be located in the support line as counter attack Coy on sector. B Coy released during the night, its services having not been utilised by 6/Wilts R.

Each F. L. [Front Line] Coy was ordered to place a protective post 100-150 yards forward of the F.L. trench.

16/4/18 – 12.15pm: Left F.L. Coy enfiladed by enemy guns. Battn HQ was shelled throughout the morning.

4.0pm: Battn HQ moved to tunnel about N.20.d.central

4.10pm: Left F.L. Coy reported enemy T.M. Bombs dropping in their trench.

7.15pm: Intense shelling (HE & Gas) opened on our front & support lines. No enemy attack developed

8.30pm: All quiet again & front line ok.

17/4/1918 – 2.0am: A strong reconnoitering patrol went out from about N.28.c.5.3 under 2/Lt Doughty? & proceeded in a SE direction with a view to ascertaining if the enemy had withdrawn from our portion of the line as a result of our successful counter attack on Wytschaete the previous evening. The patrol went out about 400 yards but saw or heard nothing of the enemy.

4.30 to 6.0am: Our artillery very active.
