Circumstances of Death

Sydney is listed as dying of wounds on 7 Mar 1916. According to his service record he was originally wounded by gunshot on 20 Feb 1917 and admitted to the 34th Casualty Clearing Station at Grovetown (Somme) with gunshot wounds to arm and ribs and then on 5 Mar 1917 he was transferred to the 3rd Stationary Hospital at Rouen where he died the next day.

The 10th Battalion war diary entry for 20 Feb 1917, the day he was wounded, is transcribed below.

In The Line [near Guillemont] - 20th: 3.50am Enemy recommenced shelling

4.30am: Shelling stopped

5.0am: Situation norma but slightly more shell fire than usual. Slight mist and rain. Relieved by the 11th K.R.R.C. Relief completed by 10.30am. Slippery walk back over the duckboards to Guillemont Camp.
