Alfred is listed as being killed in action on 5 Oct 1918. His unit, 3rd Siege Battery, RGA had become part of 85th Brigade Royal Garrison Artillery in March 1918 and after this time they were no longer required to keep their own war diary. The war diary for the 85th Brigade contains only brief entries and the 1st & 5th Oct are not actually listed. The entries for the 1st to the 6th Oct are transcribed below but not give any details of how Alfred may have died but an entry from the 29th Sept reveals why the Brigade was near Bellicourt where Alfred was buried. Ephey - 29-9-18: Hindenburg Line broken at Bellecourt Epehy - 2-10-18: Harrassing fire on Beaureavoir, Villers Outreaux, Richmond and Vauxhall Quarries. Epehy - 3-10-18: Brigade transferred to XIII Corps H.A. Epehy - 4-10-18: Batteries moved to positions south of Bony. Attached to 7th Infantry Brigade (25th Div) Colonel & Adjutant established forward Brigade HQ on Bellicourt - Le Catelet Road. Bony - 6-10-18: Batteries moved to positions in Kukri Valley and registered on Serain. |
