Circumstances of Death

John is listed as being killed in action on 1 Aug 1916. The 11th Battalion war diary entry for that day is transcribed below.

Becourt Wood - Aug 1, 1916 - 10/11am: Hostile H.E shells from a heavy gun dropped & exploded in quick succession among the companies in close bivoucs, involving many casualties before the Battn could take cover in the adjoining trenches alloted to the Companies. 3 Officers [named] were wounded. OR's Killed 10, wounded 37 missing 2. Total 52.

Previous to this date no serious shelling of the Wood had taken place. The Battn was at once moved about 300yard outside the Eastern edge of the wood, where a line of good deep trenches exist. END
