Circumstances of Death

Giles died of Pnuemonia on 31 March 1917 whilst in England to take up a commission. His death was reported in the Birmingham Evening Mail on April 7th 1917 and the report is transcribed below.

MIDLAND HOCKEY PLAYERS DEATH

The death has occured at his home at Brathey Hall, Ambleside [Probate states he died at the Low Wood Hotel, Windermere] of Gunner Giles Blomfried [Blomfield] Redmayne a well known figure in Midland Hockey, football and cricket circles. Gunner Redmayne, who was in a heavy howitzer battery of the Royal Field Artillery, had been on active service since the spring of 1915, and had been awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous bravery in volunteering to enter a shell-swept zone for the purpose of finding the direction of fire.

He had returned to England to take up a Commission, but succumbed to pnuemonia.

He was a member of the Bromsgrove Hockey Club and played several times for Worcestershire and the Midland Counties. He was also a dashing cricketer, playing regularly for the Ilewell Cricket Club and assisted the Rugby F.C. as a three-quarter back.
