Circumstances of Death
John is listed as dying of wounds on 11 Feb 1915 and that would have been at the 33rd Casualty Clearing Station, Bethune which used Bethune Town cemetery for its burials. His De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour entry states that he wounded at Cuinchy on the same day that he died. This is confirmed by a very brief report in the Rugby Advertiser on February 27th 1915 from which the above picture is taken. The also brief 3rd Battalion war diary for 11 Feb 1915 is transcribed below. Cuinchy - Feb 11. 1915: Relieved by 2 C.G. in evening and marched to billets at Bethune. Casualties 5 W [wounded]. End Rugby Advertiser - February 27th 1915 This is portrait [see above] of the eldest son of Mr. W and Mrs. Richardson, The Banks Dunchurch. Pte John Richardson of the Coldstream Guards volunteered for the front at the outbreak of the war and landed in France on November 12th. He died from wounds received in action on February 11th. He was one of the smartest of the young men that went from Dunchurch. Up to the present, in addition to Pte. Richardson the following Dunchurch men have been killed:- Lance-Corpl E. Parker, Lance-Corpl White; Pte R Norman and Gunner Harry Pearce (on the Bulwark). |
