Circumstances of Death

Charles is listed as being killed in action on 2 Apr 1917. His unit, 62nd Company was the Machine Gun Company for 62nd Brigade.  The brief war diary for them is transcribed below and shows that Charles died during a successful attack near Croisilles.

Croisilles - 2-4-17: Company took part in our advance on the Croisilles-Henin sur Cojeul Road which was captured after a little fighting from 51B.T.17.b.6.1 and 51B.T.3.b.1.9. No 1 Section advanced with the 12th Northumberland Fusiliers on the left front from T.9.b.7.3 to T.3.a.3.4. No 4 Section with 1st Lincolns Reft from T.16.b.2.8 to T.9.b.7.5. No 3 Section with 13th Northumberland Fusiliers from T.16.b.2.8, No 2 Section remaining in reserve at Hamelincourt.
