Service History

  • 30 Dec 1913 to 30 Mar 1914 - Enlisted in Royal Warwickshire but found to be underage (17) as opposed to being 18 on his attestation
  • 31 Mar 1914 to 7 Nov 1914 - Home - William turned 18 on 20 Oct 1914 and having been allowed to enlist as a "Boy"
  • 08 Nov 1914 to 13 May 1915 - France
  • 14 May 1915 to 18 Oct 1915 - Home in hospital due to wounds (see below)
  • 18 Oct 1915 - Discharged from Army due to severe wounds

Circumstances of Death

William died at the Star and Garter Care Home in Petersham, Richmond, Surrey on 11 Feb 1916 having suffered a gun shot wound to the thorax and spine in the trenches at Steenbecque on 2 Apr 1915.

The 1st Battalion war diary entry for 2 Apr 1915 states "About 1.20pm German Howitzers shelled reserve trench in rear of No 7. Very little sniping. Relieve by R. Dub Fus in evening. 1 wounded. END

William's service/medical record shows that William was wounded by a gun shot wound to the Thorax while taking rations to trenches and that by the 3rd April he was in a Belgium hospital and then transferred to a British Military Hospital in Boulogne. e was paralysed and following treatment he was transported to Stanmore Military Hospital on 14 May 1915 and then five months later, on 18 Oct 1915, he was discharged from the Army as unfit due to his wound. He would then have been taken in by the Star & Garter Home where he died on 11 Feb 1916 from 1. a Gunshot wound to the Spine and 2. Heart Failure.

  • He was given the service number 1467 on his first enlistment
  • We have not found William in 1911 census and it is thought that he was in an Industrial School
