Circumstances of Death
Arthur is listed as dying of wounds on 29 Aug 1916. The Battalion war diary reveals in an appendix that he was wounded on 26 Aug 1916 and taken to hospital. Both the 1st and 44th Casualty Clearing Stations used Puchevillers Cemetery to bury their dead and Arthur would have died at one of them. The extent of his wounds are not stated. The very brief Battalion war diary entry for the 26th August is transcribed below and from it we assume that Arthur was wounded by shell fire: 26 Aug 1916 - Bouzincourt: Bn relieved 1/6 R War R in trenches near Ovillers. Heavy shelling. Wet day. [END] |
